You need a port number to communicate by TCP or UDP.
IANA is responsible for assigning TCP and UDP port numbers to specific uses.
The port numbers are divided into three ranges : the Well Known Ports, the Registered Ports and the Dynamic and/or Privite Ports.
The Well Known Ports are those int the range 0-1023.
These ports are assigned by the IANA and on most systems can only be used by system(or root) processes or by programs executed by privileged users.
The Registered Ports are those in the range 1024-49151.
These ports are listed by the IANA and on most systems can be used by ordinary user processes or programs executed by ordinary users.
The Dynamic and/or Private Ports are those int the range 49152-65535.
These ports are not used by any defined application.
Therefore, you can assign a port number in the range 49152-65536.
