No. 1746 Re: Re: Re: Re: RS422 converter 2020-07-21

Dear Johan ,

Thank you for your information.

As we can see from the documents you sent, these devices are using Modbus protocol to communicate with each other.
In this case, instead of normal RS422 to Ethernet Converter, we should use Modbus gateway to make these products communicate with each other via Internet/LAN.
The Modbus gateway helps to convert Modbus Serial to Modbus TCP and vice versa.
We recommend you to use SMG-5420 (RS422/485 Modbus Gateway) in your project.

Since HMI Monitouch supports both Modbus Serial and Modbus TCP, there are three possible ways to install your network.

Topology 1:

- Advantage: require only one Modbus gateway to connect to 4 HMI Screens.
- Disadvantage: The distance between four HMI screens is limited due to RS422 characteristics.

Topology 2:

- Advantage: The distances between four HMI screens have no limit.
- Disadvantage: require four Modbus gateways to connect to 4 HMI Screens.

Topology 3:

- Advantage: The distances between four HMI screens have no limit. The connections between 4 HMI Screens require no additional Modbus Gateway => cost efficiency.

If you use topology 3, you may need to configure the HMI screen to use Modbus TCP.

Please note that the current firmware of SMG-5420 (RS422/485 Modbus Gateway) only supports a single TCP connection.
It means at the one time, it only accepts the connection from one device. So right now Topology 1 is a suitable solution.
Fortunately, we are going to release a new firmware that supports multi-connection. It means all Topology 1, Topology 2, and Topology 3 can be used.

The exact release date of the new firmware is yet not fixed but will be within a month from now.

I hope the above is useful to you.
Please feel free to contact me if you need any further information.

Thank you,

Best regards,

Khanh,
